The Book On Longing

Sentence #1: The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale.
When taking this photo initially I had no idea what the meaning was going to be or what I was really going for conceptually. When re-reading these sentences this photo really spoke to me for the line "the body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." The use of my body and face against the rose perceives the scale and size of the rose. 

Sentence #2: Capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience.
I honestly could not think of a better photo for this sentence from the book On Longing. I stumbled upon this cluttered and beautiful oasis when visiting my brother in Philadelphia. Clearly this person on the collecting viewpoint has the capacity part down. Although these objects are not part of my own authentic experiences the capacity of random objects makes you feel like you have traveled amongst the world. When passing by this collection of goods it causes you to stop and really take in all of the goods piled up. It was pretty magical.


Sentence #3: The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the three dimensional into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body. Im not really the small monument trinket type of gal. However I love photography and I love to travel so this was my idea of a souvenir. When looking at this photo again it is incredible how this very special trip in this monumental and grand city really lacks of all of its charm and awe-inspiring skyline. Instead in this photo it takes this 3-d and massive skyline into a small skyline of metal buildings.

Sentence #4: Nostalgia can not be sustained without lose. 

Most of my nostalgic and memorable events come from times with my family. My siblings and my parents are the greatest people on this planet. They are my best friends and my people. This photo was taken right before both my brother and sister left to go back to school and work. When you think about it some of the greatest and most memorable moments come with some sense of lose. It does not have to be grave or sad however a sense of lose also creates a sense of longing. 

Sentence #5: To have a souvenir of the exotic is to possess both a specimen and a trophy.
It is quite a special thing to be able to say that you have been to different countries and have been immersed in an exotic and  beautiful culture. This photo is a souvenir of the time I got to travel to Mahahual, Costa Maya, Mexico. This was a pretty exotic little island and I will forever cherish this photo to remember a once in a lifetime opportunity.
